Retaining Walls

Built to drain. Built to last.

A natural stone retaining wall stabilizing a sloped backyard

A retaining wall is half engineering, half craft. Done right, it disappears into the landscape and holds back tons of soil and water for decades. Done wrong — and we see plenty of those — it bulges, leans, and washes out within a few years.

The difference is what you can’t see. The base. The drainage tile. Clean gravel backfill instead of clay. The compaction. The first course leveled twice.

We build segmental block and natural stone walls across Springfield, Ozark, Nixa, Republic, and Battlefield — most of them under 4 feet, which keeps them in residential-permit territory. For taller walls, or anywhere a wall is holding back a structure or a driveway, we work with a structural engineer to spec it properly.

What a typical job touches

Most jobs include some mix of these.

  1. Site evaluation and grade analysis
  2. Wall design — block, natural stone, or hybrid
  3. Excavation and base prep — compacted aggregate sized for wall height
  4. Drainage tile and clean gravel backfill
  5. Wall construction — leveled, locked, capped
  6. Backfill, regrade, and finish landscape above and below

How we work

From first walk-through to final cleanup.

  1. Site visit and measurements

We look at slope, soil type, water flow, and what's planned above and below.

  2. Material selection

Segmental block (Versa-Lok, Belgard, Pavestone-style) for clean lines, natural stone for an organic feel. Walls over 4 feet typically need engineering and may need a permit — we flag that early.

  3. Excavate and prep

Bury the right amount of aggregate base, level it twice.

  4. Build

First course is everything. We go slow on it. Drainage tile and clean gravel go in as we backfill, course by course.

  5. Cap and grade

Finished cap stones, regraded soil and turf above and below, full cleanup.

Common questions

Answered straight.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?

In Springfield and most surrounding cities, walls over 4 feet measured from the bottom of the footing typically require a permit and engineered design. Most residential walls we build come in under that. If a permit is needed for your project, we'll discuss the process together.

How long does a retaining wall take to build?

A typical 30–50 foot residential wall is 2–4 days on site, depending on excavation, base prep, and weather.

Will the wall last?

A wall lives or dies on the base and the drainage. Done correctly — compacted aggregate base, drainage tile, clean gravel backfill — segmental block walls have effective lifespans of 30+ years. Walls fail when corners are cut on the parts you can't see.

Block or natural stone?

Block is faster, more predictable, easier to engineer for height. Natural stone is more expensive and more beautiful for short walls and garden borders. Both have their place — we'll talk through what fits the property.

My existing wall is leaning. Can it be fixed?

We'll evaluate it. Walls that lean or bulge usually failed because of drainage or base issues, and the fix is rebuilding rather than patching. We'll tell you straight.
